Visual art education encourages a spirit of inquiry leading to a richer and more nuanced engagement with the world. Students learn to rigorously observe their cultural and tangible environment and in doing so, they learn to comprehend deeper meaning, challenge assumptions and solve problems creatively. This pursuit of inquiry and the challenge of learning by doing leads students to dig deeper and to ultimately become more comprehensive and innovative thinkers.

FALL 2012 ART275 - Digital Media: Still Image
A quality digital camera is a required tool for the ART275 course. It is critical that you select and acquire a camera quickly in order to become familiar with the camera in order to produce work for the course. Your camera should be at least 10 megapixels and preferably have a larger than 1/1.7” sensor, custom white balance, and be capable of producing uncompressed files (RAW or TIFF). The DPReview website has a selection guide here.

While good cameras can range from $200 to many thousands, you can often find good deals on used and refurbished equipment.  The Olympus E-PL fits our requirements and can frequently be found for under $200 refurbished with the 14-42mm kit lens. Be sure that you are buying a camera with a lens and not just the body.

Note that "digital bridge" cameras often look like a DSLR but have the same sensor size as a compact. Also note that a camera phone is not an acceptable capture source for this course.
