FOUNDATION DESIGN ART05

Instructor: Joshua Field

This course explores techniques utilizing both the principles of design (unity, variety, scale, balance, rhythm, emphasis) and elements of design (line, shape, color, value, texture) to achieve effective visual communication.

Lectures, assignments and discussions investigate specific visual problems and explore a variety of creative solutions. Assignments are reviewed in participatory group critiques. Basic Studio Design is a workshop format course and as such, hands-on participation is an intrinsic part of the visual problem solving process. All class work is intended to both instill the fundamental principles of design and foster creative problem solving.
course objectives:

  • Students will develop clear comprehension of visual communication using elements and principles of design.
  • Students will explore a range of physical media and methods as they work toward solving visual problems.
  • Students will learn to critically evaluate and discuss design using the language of visual analysis.
